Jonathan Dwyer Arrested For Domestic Violence; NFL Star Deactivated By Cardinals

Jonathan Dwyer of the Arizona Cardinals was arrested on domestic violence charges Wednesday, the latest in a string of NFL public relations nightmares.

Not even 24 hours before Dwyer’s arrest, the Minnesota Vikings banned Adrian Peterson, a star running back facing child abuse charges, indefinitely.
The Carolina Panthers recently did the same with Greg Hardy, a defensive end who is currently appealing a domestic violence case of his own.
All of these cases arose, or at least made national news, following the stunning release of the Ray Rice video in which he knocks out his now-wife.
Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended by the NFL, which has been under heavy criticism for its handling of that case and others.
The Phoenix police, in a statement, said detectives arrested Dwyer, a running back, in Tempe on charges of aggravated assault in a domestic violence case.
The investigation stemmed from two separate episodes at his home in July.

Dwyer, who was deactivated by the Cardinals, denied that any assaults took place, but was nonetheless jailed and rung up on some pretty serious charges:
  • Aggravated assault causing a fracture
  • Aggravated assault involving a minor
  • Two counts of criminal damage
  • One count of preventing the use of a phone in an emergency
The victims were said to be a 27-year-old woman and an 18-month-old child. Phoenix police said the woman left the state with the child after the episodes.
“We will continue to closely monitor this as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available,” the Cardinals said in a statement.
