When Damon is away (maybe for good), will Elena play (with her ex-boyfriend)?

The CW has unveiled the first official poster for The Vampire Diaries Season 6 and it features all of the show's major players, including a returning Matt Davis (as Alaric) and Michael Malarkey (as Enzo).

But it's clear where the focus of most fans will be: look at Elena and Stefan holding hands!!!

Does this tease a return of Stelena? Possibly.

But Bonnie is also paired with Damon, as these two are somewhere on The Other Side, and we somehow doubt they'll be doing the nasty any time soon.

So Elena and Stefan could just be bonding as friends over their missing loved ones.

Here's what we know for certain about The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1, which airs on Thursday, October 2 and is titled "I'll Remember."

• It will pick up four months after events that concluded The Vampire Diaries Season 6.
• Elena will be pre-med, and also popping crazy drugs that make her hallucinate Damon.
• Stefan will have gone off on his own to deal with the tragedy.
• Alaric will be a college professor.
• We'll dig deeper in the backgrounds of Liv and Luke.
• Caroline will remain really hot.
